Shortly after finishing her masters degree program at Western Michigan University, Megan ran from the cold to the warmth of South Carolina. After a short stint in Charleston she moved to Greenville, not knowing a soul and fell in love with the beauty of the city. One day she joined an aerial yoga class with Kelly Vanleeuwen, founder of Maya Movement Arts, and while Megan enjoyed the class, Kelly saw that Megan was looking for a challenge and offered a few movement options outside of her current abilities, which set the determination in Megan to continue and she never looked back! A few months later, Megan was performing in her first aerial sling/hammock showcase and signed up to take part in teacher training through Maya Movement Arts.
During her time with Maya Movement Arts Megan taught aerial yoga, aerial hammock/sling, conditioning, then with Kelly’s suggestion attended a lyra class in North Carolina. It was lyra-love at first sight. After she got her very first lyra, Megan started self-training multiple times a week and attending private lessons where, and whenever, she could. Included North Carolina, Michigan, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, wherever she could find an aerial coach who could challenge her, she showed up. The more Megan explored the lyra the more she came to love the way she could combine strength and flow. Constantly trying to find the most fun and intricate ways to get from point A to B. Her students fondly call this her “noodle brain” and it has become the basis of her classes. After attending lyra coaching certification courses, Megan built a curriculum and started to spread her love for this apparatus in Greenville.
Since this time, Maya Movement Arts shifted and Megan created M.Alice In Flight Studio, fondly named for her love of word play and “Alice in Wonderland” using her own middle name. After years of coaching in the Lofts, Megan was forced to take a short hiatus to have wrist surgery. When it came time to return to coaching, she sadly learned that the space would be shutting down and all businesses were forced to move. After some downtime and a trying search, Megan re-opened M.Alice In Flight Studio at Crossfit B2L.
Megan has come back to coaching with a greater love and determination than ever. With her extensive history in her professional life and aerial work, she has built an understanding of people of all ages, both mentally and physically. She enjoys helping people to recognize the strength they have in themselves that they may not have seen or acknowledged before. As a speech pathologist, she also enjoys working with different learning styles and finding how to best teach each individual student. She focuses her classes on positivity above all else (followed closely by strength and “noodling”). Once her students are familiar with the hoop, she finds joy in helping them move along with the music and their feelings as a way of expression.
Megan has explored a variety of aerial apparatuses including sling, silks, static trapeze, dance trapeze, Spanish web, rope, straps, flying trapeze, and lollipop. While she has found the fun in every one of these, her heart always returns to the hoop. She loves the way that the apparatus pushes YOU to move around IT, rather than the other way around. When performing, she spreads joy as she spins and creates beautiful shapes. When not performing she flows in whatever direction the music or her mood may take her as she finds new shapes and transitions along the way.
In classes you’re likely to see her jumping around excitedly and telling you (loudly) how great you’re doing. Outside of class, when she’s not working, she’s spending time with her dogs and fiancé. Likely hiking, planning where to travel to next, sewing, playing with plants or finding some fun new hobby to try out. To see more, you can find her on Instagram at @M.Alice_InTheAir.
